SunGarden Montessori School is dedicated to the education of the whole child through purposeful, respectful learning environments inspired by the work of Dr. Maria Montessori. We are seeking a warm, dependable, collaborative Community Support team member who enjoys working with young children and contributing to the many parts of school life. This is a dynamic role that provides support across classrooms and throughout the school community. The ideal candidate is patient, observant, flexible, and comfortable stepping in wherever support is needed.
~Position Summary~
The Community Support position contributes to the smooth functioning of the school by providing direct classroom and community support. Responsibilities include supporting classroom breaks, supervising children outdoors, preparing snacks, doing dishes and laundry, assisting with toileting, substituting in classrooms as needed, and helping with other essential school tasks. This position is an important part of maintaining continuity of care and a supportive, respectful environment for children and staff. Community Support staff work closely with Lead Guides, classroom Assistants, the Head of School, and the Operations Manager to help ensure that classrooms and the broader school community function smoothly.
~Essential Duties and Responsibilities~
Collaborates effectively with Lead Guides, classroom Assistants, the Head of School, and Operations
Manager in support of school culture, operations, and community life.
Provides classroom coverage and staffing support for breaks, helping maintain continuity of care and an authentic Montessori environment.
Substitutes in Toddler and Primary classrooms as needed and supports classrooms in maintaining appropriate licensing ratios.
Supervises children during outdoor play and other school activities, maintaining a safe, nurturing, and respectful environment.
Works with children in a patient, calm, respectful, and compassionate manner.
Provides toileting support and other personal care for children as needed. Prepares snacks in the kitchen for one or more classrooms.
Washes dishes and laundry for the school community.
Participates in light cleaning and other tasks that support the school environment.
Observes children carefully and attentively, recognizing their needs and supporting their safety and well-being.
Follows verbal and written instructions and consistently follows school policies, procedures, and Oregon licensing requirements.
Maintains confidentiality regarding children, families, staff, and school operations.
Demonstrates strong communication and interpersonal skills and contributes positively to a collaborative workplace culture.
Takes initiative and approaches responsibilities with flexibility, organization, and a willingness to help wherever needed.
Participates in staff meetings, In-Service Days, professional development, and school community events as collaboratively determined by the administrator. Is excited to learn and grow as a professional, welcomes feedback, and actively participates in ongoing professional development.
~Qualifications~
Required: At least two years of work experience in an early childhood learning environment, childcare, or community engagement.
Exceptional problem-solving, communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
A patient, calm, respectful, and compassionate approach to working with young children.
Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently while also being an engaged and dependable team member.
Ability to adapt to changing classroom and school needs throughout the day.
Commitment to professional growth and a willingness to learn about Montessori education and practice.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
Ability to pass a criminal background check and meet Oregon Early Learning Division licensing requirements.
Preferred: Experience working in a Montessori school or other child-centered educational environment.
Experience supporting toddlers and/or preschool-aged children.
Experience with classroom support, childcare, or early childhood education.
Familiarity with Oregon early childhood licensing requirements.
Physical Demands:
Ability to frequently move between standing, sitting, squatting, kneeling, and crawling
Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds; occasionally lift children up to 75 pounds for safety and care.
Vision requirements include close, distance, and peripheral vision necessary for supervision and safety
~Benefits~
10 month position, $22 - $25/hr.
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with education and experience.
