Sunstone Montessori School, a long-established AMI school serving 150+ children ages 16 months through 12 years old in the John’s Landing neighborhood of SW Portland, is hiring a classroom Assistant to work with children from 3 to 6 years old.

The classroom assistant is an integral member of the Children’s House team. We are looking for reflective, observant, engaged individuals who have experience working with 3-6 year old children and who are eager to learn and develop as members of our dynamic school community. Strong communication skills, initiative, keen attention to details, and flexibility are a must. The classroom assistant provides essential daily support in a variety of ways, including but not limited to: cleaning and preparing the environment, making materials, supporting children’s independent activity, taking observation notes, supervising on the playground and in the bathroom, providing breaks for other staff members, and being proactive to support the Guide’s vision for the community.

Hours: The classroom is open 7:30-5:30; assistants work an 8-9 hour shift with two paid 10-minute breaks and an unpaid half-hour lunch. During school vacations, the assistants oversee winter break care, spring break care, and summer break care. This is a year-round, full-time position that includes occasional required evening/weekend hours and attendance at Whole Staff meetings. Final schedule/hours to be determined upon hire.

Enrollment in the Oregon Central Background Registry
Current CPR/First Aid, RRCAN, Intro to Health & Safety, Prevention is Better Than Treatment, and Food Handlers
At least one year of classroom or group childcare experience with preschool-age children and/or a degree in Early Childhood Education or child development
Ability to work as part of a team
Ability to lift 50 pounds

Compensation ranges from $13-15/hour (depending on experience), plus medical, dental, and retirement benefits.
